“A deep cross from the right gave Walsh another simple finish.”
Corby Town Under-18s made it through to the next round of the F.A Youth Cup with a narrow victory away to Peterborough Sports on Thursday 21st September. The Steelboys have enjoyed two successful seasons and this latest crop of youngsters look capable of emulating their predecessors.
Corby were rocked back after just fifteen minutes when P.S.L skipper Jamie Scott took the ball round goalkeeper Carl Curtis to put the hosts ahead. The Steelboys responded well and in the 25th minute Harry Belmonte also found himself with just the 'keeper to beat but on this occasion Peterborough's Victors Jansons blocked the shot.
Corby did draw level in their very next attack, however. A long ball out of defence by Dean McBride, one of the survivors from last season's squad who is now captaining the team, found Jordan O'Brien and his cross was put into the net by the unmarked Kelsey Walsh.
Ten minutes before half time P.S.L restored their lead when a long range shot by Kian Meadows was deflected past Curtis. Minutes later they had the opportunity to go further ahead but Jack Eldridge missed the target by inches.
O'Brien had picked up an ankle injury early on but this did not prevent the first team squad member from having a major say in the final outcome. He levelled the scores again in the 37th minute and in the opening minutes of the second half he put Corby ahead for the first time.
The Steelboys were now clearly on top and Belmonte again had a clear run at goal but was fouled by P.S.L centre back Henry Nkobi, who was yellow carded.
Around the hour mark Corby appeared to have secured their passage into the next round of the competition when a deep cross from the right gave Walsh another simple finish. But they were left with a nervy finale when Curtis twice failed to claim a high ball into the penalty area and Scott scrambled in his second goal of the evening to make it 4-3 in the 85th minute.
There were no further scares for the Steelboys, however, and the victory earned them a home tie against AFC Rushden & Diamonds Under-18s in the next round on Monday 2nd October 2017.
