Skegness born Kern began his career as a trainee with Lincoln City and at the end of his scholarship was one of three young players to be signed on a six-month contract. He made just one first team appearance for Lincoln, against Accrington Stanley during the 2008/09 season, and following his release by The Imps he joined Barnsley in January, 2011.
In July, 2011 Kern began a three-month loan spell with Accrington Stanley and made three first team appearances before also playing for Hereford United, Gainsborough Trinity and Worksop Town (on loan) during the 2011/12 season.
In July, 2012 he was signed by Boston United after a successful trial period. Kern began 2012/13 as a first choice in central defence for the Pilgrims but after making just six appearances he was released by manager Jason Lee in September, 2012.
He then returned to Worksop Town on a permanent basis and a year later moved on to Grantham Town. Kern joined Kings Lynn Town in June, 2015 and spent a season with the Linnets before signing for Stamford in July, 2016. He also appeared for Spalding United in 2016/17 and joined Corby Town in July, 2017.
