FINAL FRIENDLY WITH A COMPETITIVE EDGE

3 months ago By David Tilley

CORBY TOWN 1 AFC RUSHDEN & DIAMONDS 1

“"it took two defenders to block Sam Mulready's effort on the line".”

Both managers were reasonably happy after this pre-season friendly ended all-square. Corby included former Lincoln City and Gainsborough Trinity player Jack McGovern in the number nine shirt. Liam Dolman was missing for Diamonds because of injury but the visitors did field ex-Steelmen Nabil Sherrif and Luke Fairlamb in their starting XI.
Corby had the better of the opening exchanges and could twice have gone ahead from corner kicks. A set-piece from the left was headed back across goal by skipper Kern Miller and it took two defenders to block Sam Mulready's effort on the line. Then, a right-sided kick flew across the face of goal with McGovern being inches away from getting a decisive touch.
At the other end Fairlamb blasted an effort wide before the visitors went ahead on the half hour. Fairlamb played a free kick into the penalty area and defender Blaze Punter got just enough of a touch to flick the ball beyond the reach of Bastock.
Diamonds now had their tales up and twice came close to adding to their total as half time approached. In the 41st minute Bastock made a good save from Chris Dillon and three minutes later the Corby 'keeper was beaten as Fairlamb's fierce blast from 25-yards crashed off the crossbar.
The second period started in similar fashion as Bastock saved from Ben Farrell and the ball ended up in the net from the resulting corner only for the effort to be ruled out by referee Robbie Dadley.
Corby then began to get a grip on the game and equalised in the 64th minute. A free kick by Steven Leslie was whipped into the penalty area towards Kern Miller and Phil Trainer and Diamonds skipper Sam Brown stretched ahead of the Corby duo to poke the ball into the ball into his own net.
After 70 minutes Jordan Crawford cut inside from the left and forced a good save from Diamonds 'keeper Matt Finlay and Finlay then made a more comfortable save from Mulready.
Although this was classed as a friendly there was a competitive edge to the game with Ollie Brown-Hill and Kern Miller picking up yellow cards for getting a little too competitive.
