A second-half penalty ensured that Corby Town continued their good form with a 1-1 draw against npower League 1 side Stevenage FC at Steel Park on Tuesday evening.
Matt Rhead netted his fourth goal in two games from the spot, after the referee pointed to the spot after Stevenage’s Jennison Myre-Williams was judged to have fouled Nick Rogan in the 52nd minute. Rhead held his nerve and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom right-hand corner to bring the Steelmen level.
Corby's equaliser was more then deserved, as they matched Stevenage in all areas of the pitch and dominated for the first twenty minutes of the game.
Boro’s goal came against the run of play when the unchallenged Ben May nodded in Stacey Long’s floated corner from six yards out.
Despite the opening goal going to the away side, Corby came agonisingly close to scoring the first of the game. Some good build-up play on the left wing resulted in a sharp Andy Burgess cross and was met by the head of Rhead. There were groans all around the stadium as the Corby striker’s flick-on cannoned off the post and the resulting rebound was blasted over the bar.
Corby strikers Rhead and Rogan looked particularly sharp in the first half, often giving the Steelmen faithful a glimpse of their blossoming partnership, their passing threatening to break the Stevenage defence on more then one occasion.
The Steelmen’s confidence faltered after gifting Stevenage the lead and it was then time for Corby’s defence to take centre-stage. Central defenders Gulliver and Malone look to be playing well together, as they foiled Boro’s attacks on a regular basis and kept their strikers at bay for the rest of the match.
Rhead’s converted penalty in the 2nd half signalled an end to the attacking style of the two teams, with the remainder of the game being tussled in the midfield area.
Stevenage had a glorious opportunity to grab a winner late on however; May’s flicked header managed to leave striker Harrison in a one-on-one situation with Corby ‘keeper Chris Mackenzie. The Stevenage centre-forward looked odds on to score the third goal of the game, but somehow the Steelmen shot-stopper managed to smother the ball at his feet, much to the delight of the home crowd.
Steelmen boss Drury praised his side’s work ethic and attitude after the game, stating that he thought his side matched their npower League 1 opponents in every area. He’ll look to carry on the positive results come Saturday afternoon as Corby take on Blue Square Premier title favourites Luton Town in their last pre-season friendly, in a repeat of last season’s first round FA Cup tie against the Hatters
