In true Corby Town fashion the Steelmen followed up Wednesday's impressive victory over Droylsden with a disappointing defeat at home to Stafford Rangers, a side in severe danger of falling through the Blue Square Bet North's trap door.
Stafford knew that only a win would be enough to keep their survival hopes alive, and they duly delivered for their travelling supporters against a lethargic Corby Town in the penultimate game at The Rockingham Triangle Stadium.
It took the visitors just ten minutes to signal their intent, as Luke Keen capitalised on a poor defensive error to score past Lee Windrum in the Steelmen goal.
This was not enough to wake the home side though, as they allowed Rangers to continue to apply the pressure and nearly double their lead as a Ben Mills header went close. The second goal deservedly arrived fifteen minutes before the break, when Kean showed great skill and composure to double his personal tally and send the Stafford fans into raptures.
The second half started better for Corby as they finally began to assert themselves on the match. Steve Towers' fierce drive forced a great save from Lee Evans, before Fairclough and Diggin also went close.
The home side's pressure finally began to tell as substitute Diggin squared for Jordan Spruce to score his first goal for the club after 66 minutes. The comeback was almost complete two minutes later, but Steve Towers somehow missed the target from 8-yards despite the goalkeeper being well beaten.
Rather than build on this Corby imploded once again, as Niall Maguire wrapped up the scoring on 77 minutes to seal a crucial three points for Stafford, and once again show how inconsistent this Steelmen side is.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
