Five-star Corby Town put in an impressive display against Eastwood Town, as they bagged their first win in four games at Steel Park on Monday.
A pacy start saw the Steelmen snatch three goals in the first 30 minutes, effectively ending the game as a contest before the first half had even finished.
Drury’s men started the game sprightly and could have had the lead inside the first two minutes. Former Eastwood striker Matt Rhead managed to nod Sam Ives’ free-kick towards the waiting Paul Malone but his shot came back off the post and was cleared to the half-way line.
A thirty-yard Ives effort was to follow, as Corby looked to test the visiting goalkeeper as much as possible in the opening stages. Their dominance was rewarded in the 20th minute when Malone scored his first goal of the season.
Ives floated a free-kick towards the back post and Matt Rhead headed the ball towards goal. His effort cannoned off stopper Servern but fell to Malone who nodded the ball over the stranded ‘keeper and into the net.
Sensing a weakness in the visiting defence, Corby where quick to go on the attack and had their second just six minutes later. Stood on the half-way line, Rhead flicked on Chris Mackenzie’s quick kick which left Nick Rogan clean through. The Steelmen striker skipped round Severn with ease and rolled the ball into the net for his first goal in a Corby shirt.
Not content with just being a provider, ex-Badger Rhead had a goal of his own two minutes later. Quick feet from Steve Towers led to him being brought down inside the box by Eastwood’s Matt Caines. Rhead coolly dispatched the resulting penalty against his former employers, tucking the ball low into the right corner of the net.
Corby’s confidence was high as they began the second half and was epitomised by Andy Hall’s audacious effort from the half-way line. His lob was gratefully gathered by the back-pedalling Severn, much to the dismay of the Steelmen faithful.
Sensing a formality in the result, Drury’s men eased off the gas a little as the match progressed. Eastwood were presented with good two chances to snatch a goal back, but Mackenzie was on hand to deny the Badgers on both counts.
Corby made no mistake in dispatching their forth of the game however; substitute James Ozmen found Rhead unmarked in the Eastwood penalty area with a swerving free-kick in the 80thminute, who found the back of the net with a simple finish.
Nick Rogan completed the rout, when he converted the Steelmen’s second penalty of the game to make it 5-0.
