Corby obliterated memories of their FA Cup disappointment by thumping Droylsden 5-2 at Steel Park on Wednesday night to move into fourth in the Blue Square Bet North table.
The Steelmen were gifted the lead inside the first ten minutes when Bloods defender Luke Holden slid the ball into his own net.
Debutant Lee Beeson then provided Andy Hall with an inch perfect cross to nod home the Steelmen’s second of the night fifteen minutes later.
Paul Marshall nicked a goal back for the visitors just past the half hour mark before Sam Mullarkey restored Corby’s two-goal advantage after the restart.
Matt Rhead scored the Steelmen’s forth in the 55th minute, but a slick Danny Rowe goal in the last quarter gave the visitors hope of a comeback. Andy Towers doused any chance of a Bloods riposte when he smashed home in the closing stages.
With no hint of a Cup hangover, Corby started the match strongly and kept the ball a permanent fixture in the Droylsden half in the early stages.
Bloods defender Holden kindly ensured the Steelmen capitalised on their early dominance when he slid the ball past his own ‘keeper in the 9th minute, following a long Corby throw.
Rowe, Droylsden’s in-form striker, should have struck back for the Bloods from six yards shortly afterwards, but he completely misjudged Dan Gardner’s pull-back and the ball spun wide.
Andy Hall doubled Corby’s advantage five minutes later, nodding home a pin-point accurate Beeson cross as yet another goal-fest started to unravel at Steel Park.
Spurred on by conceding two in the first twenty-five minutes, the Bloods began to grab a foothold in the game and started to find gaps in the Steelmen defence as the first half wore on.
Their efforts were rewarded in the 36th minute, as midfielder Paul Marshall headed home following three successive corners for the away side.
A well-worked short corner almost saw Droylsden draw level in the closing stages of the first half, but Andy Longford could only watch as his snapped ten-yard shot skipped just over Mackenzie’s crossbar.
Sam Mullarkey, turning in an impressive first Corby start, restored the home side’s two goal advantage in the 52nd minute, using quick feet to dupe Droylsden’s defence before dinking home the Steelmen’s third.
Strike partner Matt Rhead added his name to the ever-growing score-sheet shortly after, slotting the ball past Paul Phillips after Hall’s weighted pass left him through on goal.
Corby, content with a comfortable three-goal cushion, started to ease off the visitors and were made to rue that decision by Rowe after he weaved his way round the Steelmen defence before rifling home in the 75th minute.
But there was to be no Bloods bounce-back on the cards, as Steve Towers sealed a polished victory for the Steelmen following some good work from substitute Nick Rogan in the dying moments of the game.
