Corby’s curse versus Solihull Moors struck again on Boxing Day, as they crashed to a 3-0 defeat in the Blue Square Bet North.
The Steelmen have now lost five times in a row against the Birmingham side, an unwanted statistic they will be desperate to break when they play Moors in the reverse fixture on New Years Day.
If Drury’s outfit are to break the Solihull voodoo, then they will need to put in a much improved performance then that at Steel Park, as the visitors practically cantered to a victory.
Both sides were guilty of missed chances to open the scoring, former Steelman Jordan Fitzpatrick and Richard Walker saw long range efforts saved while Jean Paul Marna was inches away from connecting with a drilled cross from Lee Beeson.
As the match progressed Solihull began to emerge as the stronger side and Lee Beswick made their domination count in the 20th minute with a half volley from the edge of the area. The initial shot looked to be quite tame but took a wicked deflection off Paul Mayo en route to goal, leaving Mackenzie stranded.
The goal served as a wake-up call and Corby finally began to muster attempts at the Solihull goal. Jordan Smith went close with a fizzing shot, whilst Leon Hibbert’s header from the resulting corner was palmed away by Singh.
Smith spurned an opportunity for an equaliser seconds after the re-start, smashing the ball wide of Singh’s left-hand post when it looked easier to score.
Solihull capitalised on the glaring miss, doubling their lead just five minutes later. Junior English found himself unmarked in front of goal just six yards out and only had to apply the slightest of touches for the Moors second.
Corby old-boy Fitzpatrick piled on the misery just past the hour mark, applying a sharp finish to some incisive Solihull play.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
