Corby Town manager Graham Drury has admitted to being disappointed following his side’s late defeat against Nuneaton Town at Steel Park.
Drury told www.corbytownfc.co.uk, “I am extremely disappointed. The boys actually listened to me at half time and we started feeding the balls out wide a lot more and putting them under pressure. But we didn’t take our chances and we got caught with a sucker punch in the last five minutes.
“We have now conceded seven goals in the last three matches in all competitions, and I can think of 4 of those which were on the counter attack, so myself and Paul Holden will be working hard on that in training this week. It wasn’t just the first goal today, we were also slack and allowed them to counter for the second. We were still in it at 1-0, with the chance of getting something out of the match, but the team were naïve to leave Gulliver with their big striker one on one, Gordon or Mayo should have been back really to cover.”
The Steelmen boss felt that his side did not have the luck on their side against a technically strong Nuneaton side, and he admitted:
“First half they were defensively strong and we were playing down the middle far too much. Their defence was better than ours. We started to put them under pressure in the second half but things weren’t going for us today, passes were slightly off, we were caught on the turn and shots were going narrowly over the bar.
“I thought from the start that whoever got the goal was always going to win the match, football is cruel and it didn’t matter what form we were in going into the match, we were too naïve and got punished on the break.
“Nuneaton are a very solid outfit with pace on the counter. They are no mugs, they are a very good all round team. They took three points of us at home last year too, but we then managed to beat them at their place, so we will just have to do that again this season to even it out.
“Overall today the counter has caught us and we have lost the points. I am so disappointed because it feels like they have come and stolen the points from us.”
Corby Town are at home again next Saturday, as they host North Ferriby United in the FA Carlsberg Trophy.
“The FA Trophy match is coming at the right time for me. That is two defeats now in our last three games and we need to get back to winning ways on Saturday.”
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
