Despite successfully steering themselves into the fourth qualifying round of the FA Cup with Budwiser, Corby boss Graham Drury was not satisfied with his team’s overall performance against Hednesford.
“I actually thought we were awful in the first half. I don’t expect my sides to start the way we did, I expect them to start the way we finish. At half-time a few harsh words were needed to be said – it was the first time I’ve gone mad at them all season, but it was definitely needed.”
“They’ve had a real lesson from me today, about what I expect from them. But then you have to give them some credit because they’ve shown a lot of desire to come back into the game.”
After a dire first forty-five, the introduction of the second half saw a completely different Steelmen side take to the field. It would be easy to brush away the first half as a hiccup, but Drury won’t be dismissing it any time soon.
“The score was 4-2. Scores don’t lie, we conceded two and if we conceded a third we would have been out of the competition. We can’t afford to give anyone a 2-0 lead and were lucky we got the goal when we did.”
“After half-time the players responded in the way I wanted them too and did exactly as I asked. But I’m not happy with the day, I know we’re in the next round and we can celebrate that on Monday but I’m not happy with the day because I expect the lads to be better then what they were.”
With the fourth round qualifying draw of the FA Cup with Budwiser due to take place on Monday, Drury hasn’t got a preference when it comes to Corby’s next opponents.
“There are some great sides left in the draw, but it doesn’t matter who you get; it’s always going to be a tough match because everyone wants to make it to the first round proper.”
“It’d be nice to get a home draw, we’ve been unfortunate enough to get two away ones in a row. But really it’s just the luck of the draw.”
