Corby Town were left frustrated on Saturday at Steel Park, as Pro-Evo Stik side North Ferriby came from a goal behind to earn a FA Carlsberg trophy replay on Tuesday.
James Ozmen initially rolled Corby into the lead in the 19th minute, but Ferriby forward Alex Davidson struck back on the stroke of half-time to earn a draw for the visitors.
Both teams were guilty of missed opportunities throughout the game, but neither outfit could provide the telling touch in front of goal that would have seen them through.
The Steelmen found Ferriby ‘keeper Steve Wilson in fine form, the stopper thwarting debutant Jean Paul-Marna twice from close-range.
Delroy Gordon also came within inches of nodding the home side in front, but his header was cleared off the line by Nathan Peat mid-way through the first half.
Corby boss Graham Drury had promised the home crowd plenty of goals before kick-off but it was the away side who came closest to grabbing the opener.
Gary Bradshaw found himself unmarked with the ball at his feet following a Ben Morley cut-back, but the forward’s attempt was weak and was easily collected by Chris Mackenzie.
Responding positively to the early threat, the Steelmen showed the away side the route to goal in the 19th minute.
James Ozmen collected a long ball forward from midfield, before showing composure to round the Ferriby ‘keeper and slot home from an acute angle.
Matt Rhead almost doubled Corby’s lead, following a deft touch from debutant Jean Paul Marna in the centre of midfield, but the forward’s shot fizzed past Wilson’s left post.
Rhead rolled Marna into space minutes later, returning the favour, but the Senegalese striker found Wilson equal to his close-range effort.
Both Rhead and Gordon went agonizingly close with headed efforts for the Steelmen before the half-time whistle, but it was the away side who finished with a flourish.
Alex Davidson beat the Corby offside trap, before knocking the ball past a stranded Mackenzie for the equaliser
The Steelmen should have snatched their second minutes into the second-half, but the usually composed Callum Reynolds fired wide despite finding himself unmarked and merely inches from goal.
Rhead, so often reliable for Corby, also wasted a glorious opportunity to snatch the lead for the home side, but he couldn’t connect properly with Andy Hall’s through ball. Marna found himself in a similar position, but his weak shot was easily saved by Wilson.
Corby were almost made to rue their spurned chances by Ferriby midfielder Sam Denton, his powerful free-kick forced a sprawling save by Mackenzie in the 65th minute.
The midfielder went even closer seven minutes later, heading against the crossbar following a deep cross from the right of midfield.
Nick Rogan rolled Jordan Smith through on goal seconds later, but the striker could only watch as his effort drifted wide.
Desperate to avoid another cup replay, the Steelmen continued to press but to no avail. Rhead had a late attempt which seemed destined to drift into the net, but Steel Park could only groan in desperation as his lob floated over the crossbar.
Ferriby themselves also snatched victory in the dying seconds, but Bolder’s long-range effort went just over.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
