Having begun the season with an empathetic 3-1 victory against a strong FC Halifax Town side, Corby Town are set to take on Bishop's Stortford tomorrow night in the first competitive fixture at Steel Park.
The Steelmen are currently undefeated in their new home, following impressive wins over Notts County and Luton Town during pre-season, with a draw against Stevenage sandwiched in between.
Boss Graham Drury has called for a repeat performance following the opening day victory over the league favourites, insisting that Corby's win at the Shay will mean nothing if it isn’t followed up with another three points.
Bishop's Stortford meanwhile, will be looking to bounce back from their opening day defeat against Welsh side Colwyn Bay. The Blues looked uninspired and flat as goals from John McKenna and Sean Doherty saw them crash to a 2-0 defeat in their first ever match in the Blue Square Bet North.
The Bishops had originally plied their trade in the Blue Square Bet South, but were moved when Rushden and Diamonds were expelled from the Football Conference. The re-shuffle gives them the distinctive honour of being the most southerly team in a Northern league.
Their last season in southerly climes saw them struggle against the threat of relegation. But three wins and eight goals in their last three matches saw them finish 16th and guaranteed them Conference football for another season.
They are managed by former Tottenham and England goalkeeper Ian Walker, in what is his first foray into football management. Former Newport County number 2 Fraser Skimming is his right-hand man, providing Walker with an insight into the level.
Having been established in local hotel ‘Chequers’ in 1874, the club are over 130 years old. They hold the admirable title of being the last ever team to win the FA Amateur Cup, beating Ilford 4-1 at the old Wembley in 1974.
Corby’s defence duo Phil Gulliver and Paul Malone will have to be wary of Bishop striker Dwight Gayle, who spent a number of seasons under the watchful eye of Arsene Wegner. The front man also spent most of pre-season training with League 2 side Dagenham and Redbridge, preparing himself for the campaign ahead.
Despite a few tough challenges from Neil Aspin’s Halifax, the Steelmen start the game at full-strength, with no injuries threatening the squad.
Both Sam Ives and Jordan Smith stated their case for a spot in the first 11 on Saturday, grabbing a goal each. Drury will no doubt be delighted with the competition for a first team place starting so early in the season.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
