Steel Park will play host to Steve Cuggy’s Blyth Spartans tomorrow as Corby Town look to win their first game in three.
After recording two draws in a row manager Graham Drury has called upon his Steelmen outfit to show their ruthless side and snatch opportunities at goal when they are presented to them.
Both Drury and defender Paul Malone have voiced their disappointment at the Steelmen’s lack of ability to finish off games when they are dominating and have called for better finishing. Corby fans will hope this is just a phase that the side will be able to overcome and eradicate against the Spartans tomorrow.
Blyth head into the fixture off the back of a 2-0 home defeat at the hands of Stalybridge Celtic on Tuesday evening. Despite the loss manager Steve Cuggy was pleased with the performance and believed his side put in a good show against one of the strongest sides in the league.
They currently sit 18th in the Blue Square Bet North league, managing just nine points in their opening ten matches. Despite netting in all of their home fixtures so far, the Spartans have scored just twice on their travels and have struggled to hit the net away from home.
The Spartans had no such problem in the corresponding fixture last season, putting four past Corby ‘keeper Lee Windrumas they edged Corby by a single goal in a thrilling encounter. Blyth would no doubt settle for a similar scoreline this time around as they go in search of their first away win of the season.
Captain Graeme Armstrong is the Spartan’s current top scorer, having netted just twice so far this season. His second came against former employers Harrogate, for whom he scored an impressive 23 goals last season. Corby’s defence will have to be wary of the experienced centre-forward, as he looks to replicate last year’s form.
At the other end of the field, the Steelmen strikers will look to regain their early season form by netting against the Spartans. Neither Smith, Rhead or Rogan have scored in Corby’s last three matches.
Leon Hibbert is expected to retain his starting place in Drury’s first 11, having played the full 90 minutes at Gloucester in midweek. The versatile midfielder has spoken of his delight at clocking a full match for the Steelmen and is now determined to keep his place in the first team.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
