A gruelling 380 mile round trip awaits Steelmen players and supporters alike this weekend, as Corby Town travel to Wales to take on Colwyn Bay in the Blue Square Bet North.
Having lost to Stalybridge Celtic in their last league encounter two weeks ago, the Steelmen will be looking to replicate their current FA Cup with Budweiser successes and return from Wales with three points.
Despite their victory against Hednesford last weekend manager Graham Drury has called upon his outfit to improve on their all-round performance. Drury openly voiced his disappointment in his side’s lacklustre first half display labelling it as “awful.”
A return to league action for the Steelmen sees the return of defender Paul Mayo, who has finished serving his three-match suspension. He is expected to replace the injured Ansley McDonald, who is sidelined for approximately 6-8 weeks with a foot injury.
Colwyn Bay enter Saturday’s contest against the Steelmen buoyed by their 2-0 home victory against Stalybridge Celtic, a side Graham Drury has branded the strongest in the league.
A very early Mike Lea header was followed up by a late Lee Davey penalty to inflict Celtic’s first defeat of the season and give the Seagull’s their first win in four matches. Manager Dave Challinor described his delight in the aftermath of the victory, stating that the result shows that his side “can compete with the best sides around.”
Following their promotion to the Blue Square Bet North last season, Colwyn are currently sitting 8th in the table, one place ahead of Corby. With ten different scorers in their twelve league matches so far the Steelmen defence will have to be wary of an attacking threat from all over the park.
Looking ahead to tomorrow’s contest, Challinor has described Corby as “a big, strong, physical side with a strong centre forward in Matt Rhead who scores a lot of goals.”
Steelmen supporters will be hoping Rhead can get his name on the scoresheet tomorrow, as he looks to follow up his first competitive Corby Town hat-trick against Hednesford against the Seagulls.
The home side are set to be without hit-man Jon Newby, who misses the game with a hamstring injury. Captain Damien Allen also faces a late fitness test before kick-off on Saturday, after finishing the Stalybridge Celtic game with a back complaint.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
