Corby Town travel to Histon tomorrow having lost their last two matches on the bounce, and determined to make amends for the dropped points.
Despite losing two games over the course of four days, Steelmen captain Phil Gulliver has insisted the club are heading in the right direction and are still playing well.
Gulliver said: “I don’t think we have let ourselves down in terms of work-rate and effort, we just need to find that cutting edge to our game. We all remain confident in what we are trying to achieve and we know we have the performances within us to get back to winning ways."
Even though both matches will go down in history as defeats, Corby’s second half performances over the course of the two matches deserved a lot more. On another day the Steelmen could have walked away with points in the bag and were unlucky not to do so.
Graham Drury’s men will get the chance to make amends tomorrow when they face a Histon side still looking for their first win of the new season. Having drawn two and lost two, the Blue Square Bet North new boys find themselves 20th in the table.
It’s not the start Stutes fans envisioned for their side, who are looking for a fight-back following their relegation from the Conference National last season.
Histon are currently managed by ex-Hull midfielder David Livermore, who took over from Alan Lewer in August 2010. Describing his first foray into management as a “fantastic opportunity”, Livermore has built a side based on a strong youth policy and signed a new two year deal in May this year.
Livermore will be looking for a positive reaction from his side when they take to the field against Corby, having shipped five goals at home to Worcester City on Tuesday evening. Four of the Royals’ goals were scored from corners, a weakness that the Steelmen will look to exploit come kick-off.
At the other end of the pitch, Corby skipper Phil Gulliver and his defence will have to keep a close eye on Histon hit-man Dan Holman, who is the Stutes current top scorer. He is said to be a single-minded natural finisher, who can score from anywhere on the pitch.
Steelmen boss Drury is expected to field the same side as he did against Gainsborough, having been pleased with their overall performance. Drury has spoken of his frustration at Corby’s slow start on Tuesday night however, and will be looking to his team to dominate straight from the off with pacy attacks and pin-point crosses.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
