Corby Town take on Blue Square Premier title favourites Luton Town in their final pre-season friendly at Steel Park on Saturday in a repeat of last year's FA Cup First Round clash.
The Steelmen enter the contest on the back of a three-match unbeaten run, which included two games against higher league opposition, leaving them currently undefeated at Steel Park. With the first game of the season against FC Halifax Town looming, boss Graham Drury is looking to build on this impressive form, which he has credited to the team’s work ethic and the good atmosphere in the dressing room.
Corby have also scored a goal in all but one of their pre-season friendlies, a record that the team and manager will be pleased to see continue against the Hatters.
Luton Town currently ply their trade in the Blue Square Premier, having lost in the league’s play-off final to AFC Wimbledon on penalties last season at the City of Manchester Stadium. They are managed by Gary Brabin and play their home games at Kenilworth Road.
The Hatters’ pre-season has included comprehensive victories against Evo Stick Southern Premier sides Cambridge City and Hitchin Town. New striker Aaron O’Conner has been in particularly good form, scoring in a number of games.
Luton youngster Robbie Willmott scored 16 goals from midfield last year and is thought to be one to watch for the upcoming season. The former Cambridge United trainee has electric pace and a powerful shot, so Corby duo Phil Gulliver and Paul Malone will have to be at their best if they are to stop him scoring.
Steelmen strikers Matt Rhead and Nick Rogan have looked sharp during the last few games and will look to cause Luton ‘keeper Mark Tyler as many problems as possible.
Drury told corbytownfc.co.uk: “I always believe in winning. Be it in a league match or a friendly. It adds confidence to the team, which I believe is essential to playing good football.
"We would be expected to be rolled over by many, with Luton being Blue Square Premier title favourites, but we’ll be there to put in a performance just like we did against Notts County and Stevenage. Fans want to see you score goals and play to the best of your ability and we need to do that against Luton. Personally I always go out to win the last game of pre-season; it instills the right mentality for the start of the new campaign.
"We came close to knocking them out of the cup last year and although we came under a lot of pressure in the second half I really thought we'd hold on and pull it off. We stood strong during their onslaught so I was disappointed when we conceded but it was a great game. Although we went down to ten men in the replay we did well and we got a lot of confidence from those two matches, pushing a team of Luton's quality – they knew they'd been in a cup tie.
"It's great that we're going to get another crack at them. I know it's a friendly but we must have made a decent impression for them to want to come here, the week before the season starts. They'll put out a strong side and want to have a good test in preparation for their opening game against Telford.
"Brabs will have a fit team and it'll be a fantastic test for us. They move the ball around so well, with such ease at times and we'll have to really be on it to stop them playing.
"It will show where we're at and it'll be a good workout for both teams, we could both have easily arranged a match against someone we'd fancy beating by three or four goals and sign off with a confidence boosting win but you don't get anything from a match like that. They are as good as any team in non-league, if not the division above and with Halifax in our opening match it will really benefit us.
"It will be good to compare ourselves to a full time club, we only have the lads here for three hours a week and we're going to have a really good idea of where we're at when we come off the field after the pre-season has finished.
