After scoring five goals and outclassing Eastwood Town at Steel Park on Monday, Corby Town now face a tough trip away to Carl Heeley’s Worcester City.
In the midst of the victorious bank holiday celebrations, Corby manager Graham Drury pre-warned his side of the difficult fixture ahead of the Steelmen.
He said: “Worcester are a very strong side and have proven that so far this season as they currently sit in the top five. Their strikers in particular have been absolutely immense.”
Corby travel 90 miles to Saint George’s Lane to take on a side in fine form. Worcester are currently undefeated in five and have scored seven goals in their last three games. This included a 5-1 win away at Histon, with their top scorer Mike Symons grabbing a hat-trick.
Their current run of form sees them sit 5th in the Blue Square Bet North table and having finished last season hovering above the relegation zone, it’s a position that Loyals fans are unfamiliar with.
Mirroring Graham Drury’s advice to his own team, City manager Carl Heeley has warned against complacency creeping into the side despite their strong start. Speaking to local press, the Worcester gaffer also predicted that the league will soon settle down and the stronger outfits will begin to emerge.
In their three encounters last season, the Steelmen emerged victorious against City twice. Phil Watt and Andy Hall ensured Corby walked away with three points from St George’s Lane, whilst a last-minute Andy Hall goal saw Drury’s men advance in the qualifying stages of the FA Cup at The Rockingham Triangle.
The home fixture in the league finished as a stalemate following another late Corby Town goal, Nathan Jarman equalising for the home-side in the dying seconds of the game.
Taking heed of Corby’s last-minute goals, Worcester have themselves made a habit of scoring in stoppage time this season. They have acquired five points in their last four matches, thanks to goals scored beyond the 85th minute.
Loyals strikers Luke Corbett and Mike Symons have scored half of Worcester’s current goal tally this season, which includes Corbett’s 90th minute winner against Eastwood last Saturday. Corby Captain Phil Gulliver will have to ensure his defence concentrates until the final whistle, paying particular attention to the dynamic duo.
Corby Town travel to St George’s Lane with their own strikers full of confidence too, as both Matt Rhead and Nick Rogan grabbed a brace each against Eastwood on Monday and will look to continue their success tomorrow afternoon.
Centre back Delroy Gordon will miss the match through suspension following his red card against Hyde. Paul Malone is expected to slide into the centre of defence following his absence. AynsleyMcDonald will return on the right-hand side of defence, having watched the last two games from the bench.
Player-coach Andy Burgess is still out with a groin strain and Sam Ives is expected to deputise in his place.
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
