Corby Town were out-classed by a rampant Rangers outfit at Steel Park on Wednesday evening, as the SPL Champions smashed six past the Steelmen.
Fielding an under-strength side, manager Graham Drury clearly had one eye on the FA Cup with Budwiser battle with Bristol on Saturday. The gulf in calibre was all too apparent from the kick-off, as Rangers stormed into a four-goal interval lead.
The Light Blues went onto add two more to their tally in the 2nd half, sealing their victory in style.
Rhys McCabe’s snap-shot opened the scoring in the 8th minute for the visitors, after striker Kane Hemmings weaved his way in behind the Steelmen back four, leaving them completely bamboozled.
Former Almeria midfielder Juanma Ortiz was next to celebrate, after he nodded home Aly Bedoya’s flicked chip in the fifteenth minute. Captain John Fleck missed a glorious opportunity to make it three, spooning a shot over Jack Drury’s goal from all of six yards.
The returning Andy Burgess attempted a response from the edge of Rangers’ area mid-way through the first half, but his long-range effort swung well wide of Neal Alexander’s left hand post.
Light Blue Hemmings made no such error moments later, as he pounced on Ortiz’s knock-down for the away side’s third goal of the night.
Not content with a comfortable three goal cushion, Gers captain Fleck put his name on the scoresheet in the dying moments of the first half with a stinging shot from twenty-five yards to make it four.
With exuberance oozing from his performance on the night, striker Hemmings was again at the heart of the next Rangers goal. Linking up with Kirk Broadfoot, the young Englishman’s dink towards the back post was nodded home by substitute Salim Kerkar in the 51st minute.
Hemmings almost added to Rangers’ lead moments later, but Jack Drury thwarted the forward by palming away a stinging shot to his left. Jordan Spruce engaged in his own defensive heroics shortly after, clearing Ortiz’s header off the line.
In a rare Corby attack, Sam Ives had a pop at goal from the edge of the area in the 60th minute, but his shot was easily knocked away by Alexander in the visitor’s goal.
Kerkar sealed a relentless Rangers performance with an inspired individual effort in the 66th minute. Deceiving Tom Land with some neat footwork, the French-Algerian sent himself through on goal. Bearing down on substitute ‘keeper Danny Wallace, he feigned right and neatly tucked the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.
Wallace ensured the score was kept at 6-0 as the game drew to a close, pushing a headed effort from McCabe round his left-hand post.
