STEELMEN TEAM UP WITH NATIONAL CHARITY TO BEAT BLOOD CANCER
10th November 2011
Corby Town Football Club is pleased to announce that the Peter Mallinger Foundation has teamed up with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research for the remainder of the current season to show blood cancer the red card.
Next Tuesday's commemorative friendly match with Rangers will officially launch the partnership and there will be fundraising activities on the night to support the charity’s vital research into beating blood cancers including leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma.
The Peter Mallinger Foundation has been formed to continue the work of the club’s late Chairman. Peter, a former Vice-Chairman of Newcastle United and Chairman of Kettering Town, as well as the Steelmen, lost his long battle with leukaemia in January, aged 74. The aim of the charitable trust is to raise funds to support the future of the football club and contribute to local and national causes.
Corby Town's Acting Chairman and Peter's son, David Mallinger, said: “We are delighted to partner with such an established charity that has done so much in the last 50 years to lead the battle against blood cancers.
“I know this is something my father would be very pleased to support and if we can, as a football club, play a small part in raising money that helps beats blood cancer then I know he would be very proud, just as we all will be.
“The Foundation has been set-up with the objective that it will serve as a legacy and make a difference to as many people as we can reach. Working in partnership with Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research we have an opportunity to do just that.”
Approximately 30,000 people of all ages are diagnosed with blood cancers each year and leukaemia is the most common cancer in people aged 18-35. Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research is the only UK charity solely dedicated to research into all blood cancers.
Kate White, Director of Fundraising at Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, said: “We are pleased to partner with Corby Town Football Club and the Peter Mallinger Foundation to show blood cancer the red card. All the money raised will go towards our vital research into better treatments and cures for blood cancers.”
