Steve Diggin went from villain to hero as Corby Town grabbed a superb 2-1 win at Workington in the Blue Square Bet North.
Diggin was guilty of missing four guilt-edged chances in the second half but made amends in the last minute with a dramatic winner, just seconds after Workington thought they had grabbed an equaliser.
The Reds made the early running but Jonny Wright headed wide when marked on six minutes and Dave Hewson shot straight at Lee Windrum when through.
At the other end, Jordan Fitzpatrick tried to catch Reds keeper Aaron Taylor off his line with an early shot from halfway while Steve Towers minutes.
Overall, the Steelmen deserved to reach half-time on terms, reward for a hard-working team display.
And their efforts should have been rewarded at the start of the second half but neither Diggin or Scott Mooney could finish.
Wright then should have put the hosts ahead on 52 minutes when given onside but Windrum came out well to block.
Diggin was out of luck again on 65 minutes when he beat his marker and the keeper but not the post and the striker still could not score two minutes later when got clear but scuffed his effort straight at the keeper.
Corby’s frustration grew still further as Towers twice found space and was twice blocked as the home defence stood firm.
For all their attacking, Corby were also grateful to Windrum for a superb save from Kyle May 72 minutes and Andy Murray-Jones the failed to get a touch to Wright’s cross soon after.
Something had to give and it was Corby who finally broke the deadlock on 82 minutes when substitute Gregg Smith picked up the ball 20 yards out and lashed home a thunderous shot.
However, with two minutes to go, Workington looked to have snatched a point when Wright’s cross beat Windrum and came back off the post for Murray-Jones to tap home.
But straight from the restart, a long ball over the top set Diggin clear and he skilfully lobbed the keeper for the winner.
