Corby Town were punished to a 5-2 defeat at Steel Park on non-league day, proving that they weren’t so pretty in pink on what was still a great day put on by the club.
Altrincham were awarded a penalty after just six minutes as August player of the month Paul Walker brought down Jake Moult in the box, and somehow only picked up a yellow card. The league scorer, who has already scored 16 goals in all competitions for Lee Sinnott’s side, was denied by the stopper that realistically should have been in the changing room at such an early stage in the game, but the fortunes of the visitors were due to change.
A second penalty, for what seemed to be a soft tackle on Nicky Clee was taken by Matt Doughty, and found the net at the second time of asking, which was probably justice from the referee, making it 1-0 after just 12 minutes.
Following a quiet 15 minutes, the second goal of the afternoon came on 27 minutes as that man Reeves made amends by tapping it at close range. Some bad defending from The Steelmen resulted in a poor first half display on non-league day for the home side. And things were to get worse before half time.
On just the half an hour mark, Duncan Watmore curled the ball into the top left hand corner with his left foot, leaving Walker with no chance, questioning whether there is a curse of the player of the month award for the former Northampton Town man between the sticks.
And as things seemed as though they couldn’t get worse, two goals in 2 minutes from Moult and Reeves made the scores 5-0 before half time. The fourth seen Walker get on the top of Moult’s effort from the edge of the area, before seeing it slip under him. The fifth, a token solo effort from Reeves slipped past the man in goal who had a nightmare, leaving it game over at half time.
Corby somehow found a slight way back into the game ten minutes into the second half as debutant Carl Piergianni found the back of the net following a goal mouth scramble, making it 1-5 and keeping the fans in the ground for a little bit longer.
Despite The Steelmen gaining some momentum, the scores remained the same in a relatively quiet second half before substitute Greg Kaziboni fired a shot at keeper Stuart Coburn, who saved it well in his first duty of the afternoon.
A second was found in added time as Kaziboni this time found the net, but it was considered another consolation as the full time whistle went not long after the decent strike.
