Corby manager Graham Drury has urged all his players to start showing consistency in their performances and show him why they deserve a starting place.
Talking after the 4-2 defeat to Halifax, Drury spoke of his desire to have an established first eleven.
He told www.corbytownfc.co.uk: “We’ve been very inconsistent in all our performances recently, the whole team. Like Jordan Smith, he looked like a world-beater today, but what will you get next week? That’s the story of the whole team at the moment.
“You can keep switching and changing players every week to move with their form, but you don’t want to be doing that. I’m dying to get that established 11. I want the players to stake their claim for the shirt like, ‘I’ve got that shirt, that’s my shirt and I want to play for that shirt week in week out.’”
Saturday’s loss against the Shaymen means that Corby have not won a league match at home since mid-November. Gaffer Drury admits he is flummoxed by Corby’s current inability to win at Steel Park.
“It’s weird. Really weird. Just don’t know what it is about the ground. Early days we were beating teams four, five, six goals to the good and I thought, ‘Oh this is great, we’re really making this a fortress.’ I don’t know, at the moment there’s just something going wrong when we play at home and it’s frustrating.”
Frustration also rang true for Drury in his side’s performance against Halifax.
“I thought we were sloppy for at least three of the goals today and they could have been avoided. You can’t afford to give a side like Halifax a two-goal lead, you go in 2-0 down against a side like that and you haven’t got a chance.
“Saying that, I thought we rallied them in the second half. Then when we got the goal and you start to think that you do have a chance.
“It’s always disappointing to score two goals at home and then come away empty-handed.”
Corby Town have received a positive response from applicants to the role of first-team manager.
