The north beckons Corby Town once again this weekend, as they make the long trip to Northumberland to take on Blyth Spartans in their latest BSN fixture.
Boasting the best away record in the Blue Square Bet North, the Steelmen have been formidable on the road this season, losing just once in eleven league matches.
That record was put to the test last weekend as an injury-ravaged Corby found themselves up against runaway league leaders Hyde in Manchester. But it was a test that the Steelmen passed with flying colours, managing to hold the Tigers to a well-earned 2-2 draw.
Assistant manager Paul Holden has branded the performance one of the highlights of the season. Speaking to www.corbytownfc.co.uk he said: “We went into the match with a very scratched up side, with players missing all over the place and to go and nearly beat the team that will probably walk away with the league certainly stands out as a season highlight.
“What’s more is that we thoroughly deserved it as well, we worked really hard and sussed them out very early on. We could have won it, but then 2-2 against the league leaders is always going to be a fantastic achievement.”
Corby’s attention will switch to the bottom tier of the BSN tomorrow, as they take on a side struggling at the bottom of the league in Blyth Spartans.
The Spartans have endured a torrid first half of the season, winning just two matches in all of their fixtures so far. But they have enjoyed a revival of sorts recently, managing two draws in their last two outings.
Striker Glen Taylor and Captain Graeme Armstrong hit the net for the Spartans in their last match against Nuneaton Town, sealing a point for Tommy Cassidy’s side. The result saw them move off the bottom of the table, a position that’s become all too familiar to Spartan’s fans so far this season.
Often looking certain candidates for relegation, Blyth have suggested that their recent results away from home have given them renewed hope of remaining a Blue Square Bet North side next term.
Spartans manager Cassidy will be hoping that that renewed hope will inspire his side to victory against the Steelmen tomorrow, which would see them avenge the 4-0 drubbing inflicted on them at Steel Park in September.
Matt Rhead, Paul Malone, Leon Hibbert and Jordan Smith all netted in the empathic victory, as Corby cruised to a comfortable victory over the Spartans.
But the Steelmen will have to do without top-scorer Rhead tomorrow, along with Jordan Spruce. The pair have both been in talks with other clubs this week with a view to moves away from Steel Park. As soon as anything official is confirmed, it will be announced on www.corbytownfc.co.uk.
Paul Malone may return to partner Captain Phil Gulliver in defence, whilst Mark Jones is expected to make his debut replacing the departing Lee Beeson.
Tomorrow's game will be of special significance for two of Corby's starting line-up. Chris Mackenzie is set to become the Steelmen's oldest ever player, whilst Andy Hall will make his 50th appearence in a Steelmen shirt if he starts.
