Corby Town retained the Bob Cummings Memorial Cup on Wednesday evening, as Ian Sampson's men brushed aside S&L Corby in the Steel Town Derby at Occupation Road.Â
Â
Sampson named a much changed line-up for the Steel Town derby, with Leon McKenzie, Andy Holt and Jason Crowe all rested from the squad.Â
Â
It was the hosts who started brightly however, and took a deserved lead after just 7 minutes, when Jamie O'Neill fed a pass to David Sheridan, who unleashed a thunderous half-volley past Paul Walker in the Corby Town goal.Â
Â
The Steelmen were not behind for long however, as Avelino Vieira showed a touch of class to race clear of the defence and deftly chip Gavin Garscadden in the S&L goal.Â
Â
No sooner were Corby level than they found themselves having completed a remarkable turnaround. Josh Moreman bagged his first goal for the club following his move from Deeping Rangers when he fired in from the wing and Garscadden failed to deal with the effort, which ended up in the net after just 15 minutes.Â
Â
Vieira added a second, followed by a stunning strike from captain Paul Malone to provide the Steelmen with a three goal cushion at the break.Â
Â
Corby again dominated the second period, but were unable to add to their tally, and had a goal chalked off for hand ball.Â
Â
After picking up his first piece of silverware as Steelmen boss, Ian Sampson will now turn his attentions to next Monday's final pre-season friendly against Birmingham City XI at Steel Park.Â
In the first half, Vieira and Paul Malone added further goals before McGillick headed against the bar following a John Dean corner. The second half played itself out with no further goals and the only downside being a leg injury to full-back Aaron McKay resulting in a ride in an ambulance. The 263 spectators enjoyed a local encounter before heading into the Occupation Road evening...Â
