Corby Town’s u16’s welcomed the arrival of Lichfield City u16’s in the second league fixture of the season.
Whilst this was another home fixture for Corby we were playing not at Steel Park this week but at the lovely facilities offered by Brooke Weston School.
It was a sluggish start by both sides but Corby gradually started to dominate possession and territory over their Staffordshire visitors. Corby’s passing game was good on the eye but Lichfield were proving to be very resolute and capable in defending their goal whilst at the same time showing quick, decisive breaks going forward.
After twenty minutes or so the deadlock was broken when Jordan Watt, whilst venturing forward for a corner, managed to control the ball from the edge of the box, turn quickly and strike his shot into the top corner of the net. This was the second goal in as many league matches for the strong defender.
Lichfield were unfazed by Corby’s lead and continued to battle hard and create several chances on the Corby goal. Corby’s goalkeeper was kept occupied by the talented Lichfield forward line.
The game continued with a familiar pattern towards the break, namely Corby passing well but Lichfield showing good defensive qualities as well as demonstrating being a real danger up front if given the chance.
HT 1-0
The second half started with both teams looking for that all important second goal of the match. And to their credit Lichfield got it. After some good forward play their striker managed to go on a pacey run, beat the last defender and finish confidently past the Corby keeper despite the desperate lunge from Corby’s last defender on the goal line.
This sort of sparked a response from Corby and following some good work by Jake Reynolds down the left, Mitch Taylor showed some quick decisive movement to get in front of his man and tuck away the resulting cross.
The match continued with good play coming from both teams with Corby hitting the post when Connor Towell found himself clear of the Lichfield defence but was very unlucky not to finish off his good work. It was left to the excellent forward play by Tom Kalugin that created space down the right and he managed to find Mitch Taylor in the box for him to claim his second of the match and Corby’s third.
The match finished with Corby running out 3-1 winners. We just want to wish all those associated with Lichfield City u16’s all the very best for the remainder of the season.
