On the evidence of this performance Corby Town could be in for another long, hard winter. Was it really just two weeks ago that the Steelmen romped to a comprehensive victory over Romulus? That display certainly seemed a million miles away from what the supporters had to endure against a competent, but hardly awe-inspiring, Basford side.
For many of the ninety minutes Corby were outplayed and outfought by the visitors. Sam Mulready, who looked like a predatory striker in pre-season, has been reduced to a peripheral figure struggling to get a sight of goal. And, being the honest man he is, goalkeeper Paul Bastock would probably admit that his second half performance would not be one he will look back on with any satisfaction.
An otherwise nondescript first half burst into life in the final five minutes. In the 40th minute neither Kern Miller nor Lewis Carr were able to get a decisive touch to a Steven Leslie free kick but as the loose ball dropped it was lashed into the net by Jack McGovern.
With hindsight, taking the lead was the worst thing Corby could have done as it seemed to awaken Basford from their slumbers. The visitors' immediate response was a goalmouth scramble from which the Steelmen somehow escaped unscathed as defenders threw themselves at the ball and Bastock made a point-blank save from Liam Hearn.
Minutes later, however, a foul by Jordan Crawford on James Reid produced a free kick from which Deon Meikle rose unchallenged to head the equaliser.
The visitors took control after the interval and just five minutes in a cross by Reid was headed goalwards by Keiran Wells with Bastock only being able to juggle the ball over the line. The Corby 'keeper then had to be alert to keep out a long range effort by Reid before Basford added their third in the 62nd minute.
Hearn was left unmarked at the far post as Ashley Grayson played the ball into the box and although Bastock kept out his effort Fabian Smith was left with the simple task of tapping the ball over the line.
The final goal, seven minutes from full time, was a total disaster for Bastock as he gathered an aimless through-ball but then inexplicably dropped it at the feet of substitute Courey Grantham who said "thank you very much" as he rolled the gift into the empty net.
