CORBY MAKE IT FOUR WINS OUT OF FOUR UNDER STEVE KINNIBURGH

1 month ago By David Tilley

CORBY TOWN 3 ALVECHURCH 1

“Lobjoit curled an exquisite shot into the bottom corner.”

The Corby Town resurgence under caretaker/manager Steve Kinniburgh continued with this victory over a visiting side who had previously not lost away from home. Kinniburgh attempted to rotate his hard working squad the best he could with Connor Kennedy and Ben Diamond coming into the starting line up and Ben Bradshaw and Jordan O'Brien, the men they had replaced at the weekend, dropping to the bench.
Alvechurch had a couple of loud penalty appeals for challenges on Luke Yates by Jamie Anton - definitely not - and Jason Lee - I'm not so sure - and a number of other attacks were nipped in the bud by offside decisions, again some tighter than others. For all their attacking possession, however, the visitors rarely troubled Sam Wilson in the Corby goal. The closest they came to scoring was with a far post Josh March header from a corner which was nodded off the line by Sam Warburton.
As Corby began to show their attacking teeth Ben Diamond hit a shot high over the bar and a low Jordan Crawford effort was saved by goalkeeper Jasmin Keranovic
Then, in the 25th minute, Crawford and Warburton opened up the Alvechurch defence down the left and Sam Mulready got in front of a defender to toe-poke the latter's centre into the net at the near post.
This sparked the Steelmen into life and they almost scored again three times in one spell of attacking pressure. Keranovic clawed away a Mulready header from a centre by Leon Lobjoit and from the resulting Steven Leslie corner the 19-year-old goalkeeper, on loan from West Bromwich Albion, tipped a Paul Malone header round the post. Leslie's second flag kick eventually fell to Lobjoit and his fierce shot was headed off the line by Jamie Willets.
The Steelmen were not to be denied a second goal, however, and in the 37th minute Crawford worked himself into a shooting position but unselfishly squared the ball to Mulready who couldn't - and didn't - miss from six yards.
Out of necessity Alvechurch went for it at the start of the second half but once again all their good intentions came to nothing and the game turned into a scrappy affair.
The Steelmen appeared to make the game safe in the 75th minute. A careless pass by Alex Dawson put Willets under pressure and Crawford robbed the full back to set up Lobjoit who curled an exquisite shot past Keranovic into the bottom corner of the net.
But having achieved their first clean sheet in 17 games at the weekend Corby were denied a second successive shut out when Wilson got his fingers to, but couldn't keep out, a well executed volley by Daniel Dubidat.
There were to be no further threats to the Corby goal and this third successive league victory saw the Steelmen climb to 11th place in the table. They are one of six teams on 17 points and are now just three points behind third place Stocksbridge Park Steels. A victory over Carlton Town on Saturday could conceivably push Corby up into the play-off places - just two weeks after they stood fourth from bottom.
