STEELMEN PAY THE PENALTY AGAIN

2 weeks ago By David Tilley

CORBY TOWN 0 NEWCASTLE TOWN 1

“"Sam Warburton then did well to make room for a shot which flew narrowly wide".”

Another penalty conceded and another defeat for Corby Town as a promotion challenge already seems a distant dream. The theory is that things will change for the better soon. The consequences of that not happening are unthinkable.
Jordan Crawford created the first opening of this game with some good play down the right wing but he could not find the unmarked Connor Kennedy in front of goal with his final pass.
After just six minutes play the heavens opened and with really big hail stones the size of, well really big hail stones, crashing down referee Mr Gareth Davies decided to take the teams off the pitch until the shower had passed over.
The game was suspended for around eight minutes and when play resumed the Steelmen again went close to scoring, Crawford being unable to connect with a cross by Lee Beeson as he literally slid into the six-yard box.
Corby continued to create chances with David Bell having a low shot saved by Raajan Gill at his near post and defenders blocking efforts from Jack McGovern and Crawford during a frantic spell of Corby pressure.
Sam Warburton then did well to make room for a shot which flew narrowly wide before the Steelmen conceded a goal completely against the run of play in the 27th minute. Paul Malone, again outstanding at the back for most of the game, played an unwise pass to Jamie Anton and he was robbed by John Higham. The centre forward, only in the starting line up because Jordan Cole had been ruled out at the last minute, tumbled to the ground under the challenge of Paul Bastock and Mr Davies pointed immediately to the spot.
This was the fifth penalty Corby had conceded in their six league fixtures and this one, like all the others, was successfully converted as Higham picked himself up to score.
With over an hour still to play there was plenty of time left for the Steelmen to turn this game around but despite plenty of huffing and puffing they rarely threatened to blow down the Newcastle house.
Warburton was having a productive game up and down the left flank and created an opportunity which was nodded wide by Kennedy.
Skipper Kern Miller sent a back header too high when pushed upfield in the latter stages but not even the youthful exuberance of substitutes Jordan O'Brien and Ben Diamond could provide the much needed spark on this occasion.
O'Brien did have one effort easily gathered by Gill while Diamond was forced wide by Luke Dennis when chasing an O'Brien pass but still managed to create a chance for Beeson which was also saved by the Newcastle goalkeeper.
The closest Corby actually came to scoring was when Aaron Bott intercepted a driven centre by Warburton and forced Gill to make a smart save at his near post.
With the Steelmen pushing forward they inevitably left gaps in defence and Dennis headed against the crossbar following a corner during a second rain storm before Bott was denied by Bastock after racing clear of the Corby defence.
