STEELMEN RETAIN BOB CUMMING CUP

4 months ago By David Tilley

CORBY TOWN 5 STEWARTS & LLOYDS CORBY 0

“"Jordan O'Brien capped another impressive display by netting number four"”

Corby Town ensured that the Bob Cumming Cup stayed in the Steel Park trophy cabinet (!) with this expected victory over a youthful Stewarts & Lloyds line up on Friday evening.
Manager David Bell has been full of surprises during the pre-season fixtures and he pulled out another with the re-appearance of midfield man Steven Leslie.
The game also gave Bell the opportunity to try out his favoured 3-5-2 formation with Jamie Anton, Jason Lee and Steve Kinniburgh the back three, Miles Smith and Jordan Yong as very much attack-minded wing backs, Connor Marshall, Jordan Crawford and Leslie in midfield and Grant Ryan and Sam Mulready up front.
Leslie had already stung the fingers of S & L goalkeeper Darren Mann with one long range shot before he hit a speculative 18th minute effort from distance which left the 'keeper stranded in no-man's-land as it sailed into the net.
It appeared that the floodgates might be about to open when Smith and Mulready opened up the visiting defence down the right and Mulready squared the ball to the unmarked Ryan who had the simple opportunity to double the advantage from six yards just two minutes later.
Anton headed over from a couple of set-pieces, Yong hit a fierce angled shot narrowly wide and Ryan was unable to convert in front of an open goal after a Crawford shot had rattled the crossbar. But the expected deluge never quite happened.
Half time brought the usual masss substitutions and a little of the shape not surprisingly went out of Corby's play. The introduction of players such as Paul Malone and Connor Kennedy didn't really weaken the Steelmen's line up, however, and they remained on top throughout the second period.
Mulready fired in the third just before being replaced by Adam Frisch and Jordan O'Brien capped another impressive display by netting number four after being set up by Crawford (see photo above).
Malone, who took over the captain's armband from Kinniburgh, twice headed over from corners and S & L cleared an effort off the line before Malone headed the ball down for Frisch to score the fifth with virtually the last kick of the game.
Some people have doubted the value of games such as this but at this stage of pre-season it is all about giving players minutes on the pitch. And further goals for Ryan, Mulready and young O'Brien will do their confidence no harm as the start of the competitive action gets closer.
