CORBY TOWN UNDER 18s 2 DESBOROUGH TOWN UNDER 18s 1
STEELBOYS STILL ON COURSE FOR TITLE
Corby Town Under 18s gained this hard fought victory over their talented counterparts from Desborough Town to keep alive their hopes of becoming champions of the Northants Youth League. With Desborough having completed their fixtures they can only look on helplessly as the Steelboys attempt to overhaul their points total.
Corby began the game strongly and Adam Witkowski had already had a close range shot blocked by the visiting goalkeeper before they took an early lead. A right wing corner reached the far post and central defender Conor Bird supplied the finish.
Newcomer Jordan O'Brien was a lively addition to the Corby forward line and it was fitting that he should double the lead shortly before half time. Having broke clear of the Desborough defence O'Brien calmly went round the goalkeeper and rolled the ball into the far corner of the net.
At that point Corby looked well set for victory but Desborough have not risen to the top of the table for nothing. In the opening minutes of the second half they fought their way back into the game with a speculative long range effort which beat the dive of Dan Smith and flew into the net. At Tarn then almost drew level with another shot from distance which again beat Smith but this time came back off the crossbar.
Desborough put the Corby defence under some pressure thereafter but the central defensive partnership of Conor Bird and Dean McBride withstood everything that was thrown at the.
Both teams had opportunities to add to their scores but at the final whistle it was the Steelboys who were jubilant.
